New Publication in the Canadian Journal of Surgery!

Updated: Nov 13, 2024

I am thrilled to share the newest publication from our research group:"Postdischarge opioid use after lumbar spine surgery among older adults in Ontario: a population-based cohort study": https://www.canjsurg.ca/content/67/3/E252

Key Findings:

💡 Preoperative opioid use significantly increases the likelihood of continued opioid use long after discharge - in turn escalating healthcare costs.

💡 Further research needs to focus on targeted strategies to manage and potentially reduce opioid reliance in older surgical populations.

I was honoured to work on this project alongside an esteemed group of students (pictured left to right), including Sarah Rabi (BScH, MSc), Francis Nguyen (BScH, MPH), and Melissa Richardson (BHSc). Their unwavering hard work, dedication, and collaborative skills provided invaluable contributions to the success of the project!

Also, thanking Joel Parlow (MD), Steve Mann (MD), Ian Gilron (MD), Jeff Yach (MD), Brian Milne (MD), and Gerald Evans (MD) for their essential contributions to the project. Finally, acknowledging Alison Froese/Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Queen’s University, and the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network.
